چکیده

The damping behavior of bent fiber near-field scanning optical microscopy !NSOM" probes operating in tapping mode oscillation is investigated in air and water. We show that the significant drop in probe quality factor Q, which occurs at the air-water interface, is due to meniscus damping. As the probe is immersed in water viscous damping adds to the meniscus damping. Damping effects which lead to a progressive drop in the peak tapping mode resonance frequency are accounted for by additional torsional modes of probe vibration. Understanding the damping processes should lead to the design of high sensitivity NSOM probes for scanning soft biological samples under liquid. © 2010 American Institute of Physics. #doi:10.1063/1.3309392$

Near-field Scanning Optical, Atomic Force, Scanning Resistance and uv Confocal Microscopy in the Failure Analysis of ULSIs Produced with the Most Advanced Sub-Quarter Micron Design Rules

Reflection near-field scanning optical microscopy (NSOM) images are presented of static random access memory chips which have undergone a chemical mechanical polishing operation. These images are compared to atomic force microscopy images on the one hand and these images show no topography on these essentially flat samples. The images are also compared to deep uv confocal microscope images at 2...

Effect of surface treatments on damping behavior of carbon and glass fiber reinforced friction material

The ability to absorb vibrations in a vehicle during braking conditions depends primarily on the selection of ingredients for a friction material and interfacial adhesion between all these ingredients.  In this work, a hybrid brake friction material is developed by combination of carbon fiber (CF), glass fiber (GF), resin and other ingredients. The surfaces of carbon and glass fibers are c...

Development of high-throughput, polarization-maintaining, near-field probes.

A novel, chemical-etching technique produces very high throughput, polarization-maintaining probes for near-field, scanning, optical microscopy (NSOM). The process includes coating the tips with aluminum and forming the apertures with a focused ion beam (FIB). The elliptical core fibers used resulted in elliptical apertures for the probes. The throughput of the probes depends on the incident po...

Near-field scanning optical microscope probe analysis.

In this article results of a comparison of two NSOM probe characterization methods are presented. Scanning electron microscopy analysis combined with electromagnetic field modeling using the finite difference in time domain method are compared with measured far-field radiation diagrams of NSOM probes. It is shown that measurement of far-field radiation diagrams can be an efficient tool for dail...

Fourier analysis near-field polarimetry for measurement of local optical properties of thin films.

We present measurements of the local diattenuation and retardance of thin-film specimens by using techniques that combine near-field scanning optical microscopy (NSOM) and a novel polarization-modulation (PM) polarimetry utilizing Fourier analysis of the detected intensity signal. Generally, quantitative near-field polarimetry is hampered by the optical anisotropy of NSOM probes. For example, w...
